More than 2,800 Idaho children spent time in foster care throughout the last year 2021, due to abuse, neglect, and abandonment.

While the number of foster children in Idaho decreased slightly, those kids who are in foster care have seen their situations get worse.

A lack of foster homes has been deemed a crisis, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) has struggled with placement since October 2021. Idaho has around 1,700 children in foster care each month.

The IDHW has more children in the system than it can place with families.

Former foster youth account for roughly 50% of our homeless population and 80% of human trafficking victims.

80% of foster youth suffer from PTSD and depression.

90% of youth with five or more placements enter the criminal justice system.

50% of all licensed foster homes quit after their first placement, leading to increased instability for foster youth.
